Eating more apples and carrots is beneficial to the old ticker.

The risk of heart disease can be reduced by eating more fruit and vegetables, researchers have confirmed.

Five or more daily portions could help to weaken the effect of a gene that increases the risk of heart attack, according to scientists who analysed data gathered from 27,000 participants.

Published in Plos Medicine journal, the findings support the advice of doctors and dieticians who have championed the five-a-day fruit and vegetable rule for years. Read more
