Initiative launched to help seniors fight the flu

Seniors need to be aware of catching the flu in old age.

A new initiative has been launched to inform seniors about the importance of protecting themselves against the flu.

The ‘Influenza Immunization for You’ program is being spearheaded by Florida Hospital Medical Group and will target people over the age of 65 who are more susceptible to contracting the virus.

Justin Menezes, MD, from Orlando Family Medicine of Florida Hospital Medical Group said: “The new initiative is specially timed to occur throughout September – the time when many older adults often visit their health-care providers to receive their annual influenza vaccination. We want residents 65 years of age and older to know there is a flu shot made just for them, in addition to the standard influenza vaccine.”

People over 65 account for over 60% of the flu-related hospitalizations that occur in the US. A further 90% of the people who die as a result of contracting the virus are over 65.
